What is Roundup?
Roundup is the brand name for a widely-used weed-killer originally produced by the company Monsanto which was acquired by Bayer in 2018.
Monsanto invented Roundup in 1974 after discovering that glyphosate kills weeds by blocking proteins essential to plant growth.
Primary Use of Roundup
The primary use for Roundup is agriculture as a herbicide.
In the United States along, each year, est. 250 million pounds of glyphosate herbicides are sprayed on crops, lawns, driveways, sidewalks, parks, garden centers, nurseries, and golf courses.
Roundup and Health Concerns
In the 80’s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concluded that glyphosate might cause cancer. Later, they reversed the conclusion due to a lack of evidence at the time. However, there has been a significant growth in evidence linking the glyphosate to cancer.
Roundup’s main active ingredient is glyphosate that is known for causing cancer in both, animals and humans based on the resent studies such as one conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
The most serious side effect from exposure to glyphosate is the development of cancer, specifically Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, leukemia, B-cell lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
Individuals who are most at risk for developing cancer are farm workers and other individuals who work with the herbicides, such as garden centers, nurseries, and landscapers.

Roundup and Lawsuits
In May 2018, Dewayne Johnson, a 46-year-old California groundskeeper who is suffering a terminal cancer (NHL) became the first person to take Monsanto to court. The Jury ruled that the company was liable and awarded Dwayne with $289 million in damages to be paid by Monsanto.
Now, there are over 450 lawsuits in progress against Monsanto representing over 4,000 victims.
Victims and their families are suing Monsanto because the active ingredient, glyphosate in the company’s product called Roundup may have caused them or their loved ones to develop Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL).
These legal cases accuse Monsanto in false advertising for claiming the pesticide is harmless to humans and covering up the real risks of using Roundup and therefore, endangering their health and lives.
